The Importance of a Functional Chimney Cap

A chimney cap is a small investment that prevents thousands of dollars in structural damage. In our damp climate, leaving the flue open or relying on a damaged cap exposes your home to water, wildlife, and safety hazards.

• Prevents Costly Water Damage: Rain is masonry's biggest enemy. A functional cap deflects heavy Oregon rainfall, preventing water from rusting dampers, cracking clay flue tile liners, and rotting surrounding drywall or ceiling joists.
• Keeps Wildlife & Pests Out: Uncapped flues offer warm shelter for birds, squirrels, and raccoons. A secure mesh cap stops animals from nesting, preventing dangerous flue blockages and odors.
• Prevents Debris Blockages: Leaves, twigs, and pine needles can quickly accumulate in an open flue creating a fire hazard and blocking dangerous carbon monoxide from venting properly out of your home.
• Blocks Sparks & Embers: Floating sparks from wood-burning fires can land on your roof or nearby trees. The mesh on a proper chimney cap acts as a spark arrestor, reducing fire risk.
• Controls Drafts & Wind: High-quality caps (especially specialized anti-draft models) prevent strong PNW wind gusts from pushing cold air, ash, and smoke back down into your living space.
